Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about learning with U-Learn
Getting started
How do I book my first lesson?
Simply call us on 07979 232 231 or email [email protected]. We'll discuss your experience level, schedule a convenient time, and arrange pickup.
Do I need any documents to start lessons?
Yes, you'll need a valid provisional driving license before we can start lessons. If you don't have one yet, apply through the DVSA website.
What should I bring to my first lesson?
Just your provisional license and comfortable clothing. Avoid wearing high heels or flip-flops - proper footwear is important for pedal control.
Lessons and pricing
How much do lessons cost?
Single lessons are £45 per hour. We also offer block bookings: 5 hours for £215 (save £10) or 10 hours for £400 (save £50). Block bookings offer the best value.
How long are the lessons?
Standard lessons are 1 hour, though we recommend 2-hour sessions for faster progress, especially for beginners.
Do you offer refunds or cancellations?
We require 48 hours notice for cancellations. Unless 48 hours notice is given, lesson will be charged at normal rate.
Can I pay as I go or must I buy a block?
Both options are available. You can book single lessons or purchase a block package for better value.
Learning to drive
Do you teach automatic or manual?
We teach AUTOMATIC DRIVING LESSONS. Automatic is easier to learn and lets you focus entirely on road skills without the distraction of clutch control. An automatic license restricts you to automatic vehicles only, but with most new cars being automatic, this is rarely a limitation.
How many lessons will I need?
On average, our students are test-ready in 8 hours. However, this varies based on your experience level, natural aptitude, and how frequently you practice.
I've had lessons before but failed my test. Can you help?
Absolutely. Many students come to us after failing with other instructors. As a former examiner, I can quickly identify exactly what went wrong and fix it. Most refresher students need 6-8 hours to get test-ready.
What is your pass rate?
98% of our students pass on their first attempt. This is significantly higher than the national average because we teach exactly what examiners look for.
The former examiner advantage
What makes learning with a former examiner different?
I know exactly what examiners look for because I've sat in their seat. I teach you the critical points from day one - no holding back information. You learn what matters most for passing, not just general driving.
What's the most common reason students fail?
Inadequate shoulder checks. Most instructors teach students to just turn their head, but examiners want to see your RIGHT ear - you need to twist your entire body. This single issue causes more fails than anything else.
Do you teach tricks or proper driving?
Both. I teach proper, safe driving that will serve you for life, but I also share examiner insights that help you pass first time. For example, the 'clock method' for roundabouts or 'hit at 12' for speed bumps - practical techniques that work.
Test preparation
When should I book my driving test?
Only when I tell you you're ready. Many students book too early and fail unnecessarily. I'll let you know when you're at test standard - no keeping you on for extra money.
Do you provide a car for the test?
Yes, you can use our dual-control vehicle for your test.
Will you take me to the test?
Yes, we'll do a warm-up lesson before your test and I'll take you to the test center.
What if I fail my test?
If you fail, we'll review exactly what went wrong and work on those specific areas. With our teaching method, most students pass first time, but if not, the retake is usually quick.
Logistics
Do you pick me up from home?
Yes, we offer door-to-door pickup and drop-off service within our coverage area in London and surrounding areas.
What areas do you cover?
We serve London and surrounding areas. Contact us to confirm if we cover your specific location.
Can I have lessons on weekends?
Yes, we offer flexible scheduling including weekdays, evenings, and weekends to fit your schedule.
What happens if you're sick or need to cancel?
If I need to cancel, I'll give you as much notice as possible and reschedule at your convenience. Your lesson won't be lost.
About the instructor
How long have you been teaching?
I have over 15 years of experience in driver training and assessment, including time as a DVSA examiner.
Are you a qualified instructor?
Yes, I'm a fully qualified ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), former DVSA examiner, and DBS checked.
Why did you become a driving instructor?
After years as an examiner, I saw how many students were being poorly prepared by instructors who either didn't know what examiners wanted or kept students on too long for profit. I wanted to change that.
